Today we’re looking at the Valve Index, with it’s wide field of view, and sharp displays for Sims and room scale, Along with the Knuckles and issues with them.

I believe the Index is the Best headset for Flight sims and General use, Whilst the Pimax has a better field of view, it suffers from angler distortion, quality issues and poor comfort. The index on the other hand does not push beyond today’s boundaries, going for an incremental improvement without heavy concessions to user experience just to advance the tech in one direction at the expense of all others.

  1. An update on the Knuckles controllers thumbstick issue: I've been in contact with Steam support, and sent the controllers out for replacement, This arrived recently and i can say it works perfectly, it looks like they've finally got the stick issues sorted!

  2. The new Pimax Artisan display panels have slightly more resolution than the Index, and are oriented sideways for a much larger 140 degree horizontal FOV. Compatible with the same Index controllers and tracking stations, the Artisan has a slightly lower price, albeit without speakers. Close competition?

  3. Have looked at PointCTRL on the ED forums? Also on the PointCTRL Discord channel allows you to point and click buttons, switches and knobs etc with either hand far more natural than using the mouse. Gives full mouse emulation left and right-clicking and wheel scrolling.

  4. This is exactly what I've been looking for! I wanted a more technical review that explains the technical stuff instead of just throwing graphs on the screen. Thanks 🙂 I currently have the Lenovo Explorer mixed reality headset, I'm sure anything would really be a upgrade, do you think so?

  5. Question for all…Had cosmos in the pc, with the updated dl's from vive and streamVR, swell as the current nivida gtx 1080 dl. Getting my Index delivered today. Should I remove the vive and steamVR software First? Then install only the SteamVR-Index related Software???Thanks all.

  6. Thanks a lot for this video, you made me choose the Valve index over the other VR Headsets after a long research. Since I have the same use of VR as you do this video was perfect! Thanks again!

  7. Thank you for your excellent review Redkite. Could I get away with one lighthouse to start with? I will use it seated for DCS, IL2 and racing sims. I could then add another lighthouse and hand controllers in time, spreading the cost.

  8. I recently tried the rift-s for a couple days and was very disappointed. I don't believe inside out tracking is there…yet. I ordered the Index earlier today and am looking forward to being able to ID the enemy in IL2 Bos. At least easier than the vive.

  9. when you are playing the game in this video, is that thru the lenses shots? I had odyssey plus with rtx 2080 and from my perspective, it was not worth the GPU upgrade and I sold that headset on eBay. how is this compared to the Odyssey

  10. Mine is set to arrive on Saturday. I ordered the Index Knuckles. I understand lots of games not supporting it, but most that I play will. So I'm gonna hold on to them and switch to Vive controllers if I have to.

  11. I'd like to make the leap to VR as I'm not entirely happy with TrackIR's performance in DCS. It never seemed to work quite right. Moreover, my experiences with VR has been generally positive. I just could never bring myself to spend the money on a product that I felt needed more "fleshing out".

The Index comes with features that I definitely like, such as (among other things) wider FOV, better resolution, better refresh rates, and a mostly negligible SDE. It really does appear that the technology is beginning to mature at last.

But $1,000.00…?? Eh…that seems a bit steep to be justifiable. Particularly since it looks like it will also be necessary to replace the GTX 980s I'm currently using.

  12. Every VR headset video I watched have said "I can read the cockpit text easily" I have had 3 VR headsets now and yes they are very immersive, but I have found them to be very hard to read the text in the cockpit, Oculus Rift S being the best I purchased and tested, but they are nowhere near where we want them to be in terms of definition, which in a flight sim like DCS is essential!

  13. A quick heads up. The lanyard goes around the bottom of the controller beside the release mechanism for the hand strap as shown on the official fit guide online.
I can't remember if I saw it also on the included info.

Do not attach it on the tracking band as it would probably slide around and if the controller comes loose it may tug too hard on that area.
